Laboratory Animal Center,NTU
The facility is mostly experimental animal holding rooms, with ground floor for large animals and second to fourth floors for rodents. design emphasis of design to provide the most efficient layout and circulation systems with the highest safety standards.
The site is an independent block at foot of a hill, and there are already an Environmental Research Center and Resource management Center. The design is to integrate existing buildings to form a courtyard on this irregular site.
Most animal holding rooms do not need natural light. However, it does need a full height (270 cm in this case) maintenance floor above holding rooms. This design makes use of this level as intakeplenum for HVAC systems since air is already cooled off by building mass.
Large openings for air intake are provided, and become main facade features, and develop to be reminiscent of openings (eyes, ears, mouth) on animal bodies. The element that has most outside exposure is a circular stair at northeastern corner, its shape compliments the oval shaped lecture hall at street corner, and its stair climb also complies with exterior ramp of the hall to provide an image of double helix of DNA, and in turn meets research of life science.
