Valley Dwelling at Nanzuan
The site is at a valley in north-south direction. It used to be a terraced rice field, and later became a dumpsite of a local coalmine along the mountain road. The contour of original terraced field was recovered while dumped coal was moved to enlarge the platform of the building to provide a larger yard. Traditional vernacular site planning usually places buildings to face the valley with its back against mountain. In order to intercept breezes through the valley, and also to place the longitudinal side to face the south, this building is placed longitudinally in east-west direction with a level change in the middle to be as close as possible to the center of the valley. It therefore divides the site into four zones. A winding path leads down to the main platform from the mountain road, and the visitor first experiences the south-facing living rooms with its large openings and yard in the front. Beyond the level change, the yard becomes more of a private domain and an extension of the bedrooms. The building is accessed from the north side so as to provide juxtaposition as well as contradiction of impressions. A retaining wall provides a drop of contour at the north side, so as to accommodate service facilities. Colonnaded arcades and cantilevered eaves provide additional protection from direct sun exposure as well as rain. On the west end, a split-level is provided along with contour drop to accommodate two bedroom suites. The massing of the house twists at this level change, in response to the contour of terraced fields and also accentuates change of privacy. The building wedges various spaces like the function of bollards of retaining wall does to level change.
