Mackay Junior College of Medicine, Nursing, and Management Classroom & Dormitory Building
There is a long lineage of missionary educational institution architecture in Taiwan. Oxford Academy in Tamsui was established in late 19th Century while Tunghai University campus was realized since the 60’s.
Their eras and builders may differ, these buildings share common traits in the integration of East and West, classical and modern architecture qualities, and carries dispositions of both the establishment as well as the visionary. Moreover, the “Renaissance man” tradition of the missionaries who were skilled in medicine, design, construction, natural science research, etc. imbues its architecture a sense of precision and honesty as well as respect for its natural surroundings.
This campus was started in 2000, which sits on north facing slope overlooking the sea. With the completion of this project, a “U” shape complex will be completed with this Project as the first people encounters after entering the main gate.
The uses include general and special classrooms, offices on three lower floors and dormitories on top two. Plan layout is straightforward with a central axis and service core at center.
The massing is a rectangular box with modular division horizontally and vertically to provide windows, solid walls, and balconies along with sloped roof that meets North Coast Scenic Area Ordinance. The site is oriented east west direction, therefore there are vertical shading boards cantilevered from façade. The facade is also of minimalist approach, which appeals to precision, honesty, and subtlety. Among the greyish-white base there are accentuation of orange colors in points ( intersection and tips of sloped beams), lines (cantilevered shading boards), and planes (variations of orange on solid walls). It provides a complementary color image to the natural environs at the interface of hills, sky, and ocean.
