National Taiwan University Dept. of Chemical Engineering

The site is located at intersection of two campus axis, and location of building volumes respond to the building sequence along them. The program is to provide labs and offices for two university departments, and direct solution is to have two separate buildings sharing a common basement and a courtyard in between. North-south facing modular labs are designed for generic and open-ended uses, with  common supply and exhaust ducts and building systems. Structural system is like a book shelf with shear walls on both ends. Horizontal shading devices are awnings with spray-on grass, whose base material is composed of treated tree barks that is lightweight and fertile with built-in water supply. An interplay of artificial and natural provides a subtle undertone for design.
